Historic Congressional Cemetery: A Vision through the Centuries

December 16, 2024
Over 200 years ago, a group of residents saw a need for a burial ground in the eastern section of the new city and organized Congressional Cemetery. Today, Historic Congressional Cemetery remains an active burial ground and a lively community gathering space.

Historic Congressional Cemetery President Jackie Spainhour highlighted the stories of the more than 200-year-old cemetery and some of the more than 65,000 people buried there, including notables in both national and city life, and explained how the nonprofit organization which operates the cemetery has responded to social changes and continues to innovate to serve as a community gathering space for its neighbors and the District at large.
